An automated external defibrillator, or AED, is a machine that supplies shocks to the heart. If you are ever in a situation where you have access to an AED, be sure to use it as quickly as possible. So let’s say that you and a friend (who does not know CPR) find yourself in a situation where someone needs medical attention and CPR. Your friend should call 911 and get an AED while you start CPR. Starting CPR right away and then using an AED within a few minutes is the best chance of saving a life.
AED’s are easy, accurate, and safe to use. It can even tell you if the victim needs a shock and how to administer one. There are a series of prompts that it will give you once you turn it on.
It will also tell you where to put the shock pads on the victim. Make sure no one is touching the victim before you press the “shock” button.
Lastly, it is important to remember that if you cannot find an AED very quickly, start CPR right away.
